The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is much more needed than the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) with a view to enhancing trade and business of the country, said the Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Saturday.
” Already we have get duty free access to many other countries except the USA, we need FTA with Brazil, Chilli and Turkey”, said the minister while addressing a discussion on “Strengthening Institutions to Accelerate Growth and Lower Poverty” of the Second Bangladesh Economic Forum-2015 at Bangladesh Bank Training Academy (BBTA) in the city.
Addressing as the chief guest of the second session of economic forum, the minister said, the TPP agreement would not hinder the growth of country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector. Currently, Bangladesh is the second largest RMG exporting country.
The TPP is a free trade agreement currently being negotiated by nine countries: the United States, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam
The country has achieved remarkable progress in many sectors than our neighboring countries including India and Pakistan, despite various limitations at home and abroad, Tofail said. Last fiscal, country’s export was $32.50 billion.
The newly approved Seventh Five-Year Plan (SFYP) is a roadmap to become a middle-income country. He hoped that Bangladesh would achieve on average 7.4 percent growth during the SFYP.
