16 jailed in Sylhet for mugging

A Sylhet court on Monday sentenced 16 people, including Jatiya Party’s leader and a former councilor of the Sylhet City Corporation, to seven-year rigorous imprisonment for snatching money from a bank official in 2004.
The convicts are Tetly Union Parishad Chairman and JP district unit member secretary Usman Ali, also the current chairman of Tetli union council of Dakkhin Surma upazila, Sylhet City Corporation 26 no ward former councilor Ashikur Rahman Ashik, Shahidul Haque Shahid, Javed Ahmad, Rubel Ahmad, Kamal Hossain, Collins Singha, Abdul Momin, Rahim Ali, Shafik Miah, Anhar Ali, Angur Ali, Abdul Haque Liton, Shahan Miah, Liton Miah and Shipan Ahmad.
Sylhet metropolitan session judge court public prosecutor Md Mafur Ali said that court’s judge, Md Mafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, handed down the verdict.
He also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each, in default one-year more in jail, the prosecutor said.
‘Five of the accused – Javed Ahmad, Rahim Ali, Abdul Haque Liton, Shafik Miah and Liton Miah – are absconding while the rest were present at the court during the announcement of the verdict,’ he added.
According to the prosecution story, GM Atahar Hossain, junior officer (cash) of the Sylhet corporate branch of Pubali Bank Limited, was going to the bank’s Biswanath office from the corporate branch on February 7 in 2004, along with Tk 83,64,000 in a microbus.
