Massive pest attack on Aman paddy: Frustrates farmers in Narsingdi

Massive pest attack has been damaging Aman paddy at six upazilas in Narsingdi district creating panic among the farmers about the production of the paddy during the current season.
The pest has continued wreaking havoc on the plants foiling farmers’ several attempts to prevent it by spaying pesticides.
Local farmers said, Aman crops in different villages under the district have seriously been attacked by stem borer, locally known as Mazra Paka and stem rot and turn them yellow, have affected especially BINA-7 and Swarna varieties of Aman paddy, farmers said, adding that they will incur huge losses if the situation continues for long. The fields are turning yellowish and the affected areas are increasing day by day. They are failing to get rid of the menace even using Insecticides frequently, farmers alleged.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, Aman has been cultivated on 39111 hetares of land in the six upazila this year. But the farmers are worried about achieving expected output due to widespread pest attack on their Aman fields.
Ariful Islam, a farmer at Chor-Araliya village under the Raipura upazila said ‘I planted Aman on two bighas of land this season but eaves of the plants are turning yellowish owing to attack by Mazra Poka’. ‘I sprayed pesticide but got no benefit’, he added.
Polash Miah of Kararchor village in the Shibpur upazila said the his two out of four bights of Aman filed have been affected by stem borer and stem rot disease. He sprayed pesticide thrice but failed to control the discuses. The total production may decline significantly this year, he apprehended.
Narsingdi sadar upazila DAE office sources said, pest attack in a seasonal phenomenon. DAE has already taken steps to help farmers overcome the situation, sources added.
