Shrimp worth about Tk 572 cr exported: Frozen shrimp exports increasing from Khulna

Frozen Shrimps worth around Tk572 cr have been exported in 19 countries this fiscal year. Besides, in the fiscal year 2016-17, frozen shrimp worth about Tk 3829.75 cr was exported from Mongla and Chattagram despite having disfavorable weather, production was good, said Md. Shafiqul Islam, assistant director of the Export Bureau of Khulna .
Frozen shrimps are exported in European countries including Canada, Australia, Cyprus, Belgium, Netherlands,Russia, Spain , Itali, German and Denmark.
Sources said, Demands of shrimp-prawns worth about 700 crore are available every year in Khulna region. During the season, Shrimps are cultivated at 100 hatcheries of Cox’s Bazar and Satkhira districts and the rest 15 crore are produced. As such deficiency of prawns are available. In the first time of this year, some prawns died due to cold wave. In the month of April, diseases were found due to heat wave. Due to shortage of water, weight of Bagda shrimp are less.
Delegate of Cosmos sea food, an export institution Amirul Islam said, the new market of Bangladesh for frozen shrimps has created in China.
Lokhpur Fish, Modern sea food, Classic sea food, Alfa sea food and Cosmos sea food are exporting frozen shrimps.
Shrimps which become one pound weight comprising with 20 pieces are sold at the rate of 6 dollars and one pound comprised with 25 pieces are sold at the rate of 5 dollars, sources said.
Komolesh Mondol, a shrimp cultivator of Ghona village in Dumuria upazila said, despite shortage of water shrimp cultivation is satisfactory this year, I cultivated shrimps on 7 acres of land, Komolesh added.
Saroj Kumar Mistri, Dumuria upazila fisheries officer said, shrimp has produced much at villages Rangpur, Shovna, Magurkhali, Shahosh and Atlia.
In 2017, 11,888 metric tonnes shrimps were produced here, but this year 342 metric tonnes more shrimps were produced, Saroj Kumar added.
Khulna District Fisheries officer Md. Abu Sayeed said, in 2016-17 fiscal year, 12,412 metric tonnes Bagda were produced on 36,152 hectres lands and 13,666 metric tonnes galda shrimps wee produced on 20,034 hectres lands. On the other hand, in 2017-18 fisdcal year, 12,463 metric tonnes bagda shrimps were produced on 36,160 hetres lands while 13,680 metric tonnes galda shrimps were produced on 20,034 hectres lands.
Despite disfavorable weather, 69 thousand cultivators have achieved their targetted production.
Mentionable in this connection that Khulna , Bagerhat and Satkhira districts are suitable places for cultivating shrimps which are called “White gold” as Bangladesh government has been earning a lot of foreign exchange by exporting shrimps in different counteries every year.
Experts think, the government and other stalkholders need be initiative for cultivating and existing the shrimps in southern region in order to be benefitted by exporting shrimps in several countries of the world.
