People of the port city and its adjacent districts upazilas paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 40th Martyrdom Anniversary and National Mourning Day on Saturday.
The day was observed with a fresh vow to materialize the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build a “Sonar Bangla” and to bring back the fugitive convicted killers of Bangabandhu to execute verdict of the murder case.
Apart from the Chittagong city, north and south district units of Awami League (AL) and its front organizations, different socio-cultural organizations, trade unions, district administration and professional bodies organized separate discussion meetings marking the day. Leaders and workers of AL and its front organizations and professional bodies wear black badges in whole day.
The programmes included hoisting of national and black flag at half-mast atop all party offices, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, Qurankhwani, Milad Mahfil, discussion meetings, voluntary blood donation and distribution of foods among the destitute. Hundreds of followers of AL gathered at the party office at morning to place floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at 6 am. Around 41 discussion meetings were organized at 41 wards of Chittagong city. The historic March 7 speeches of Bangabandhu were broadcasted through loudspeakers on city streets of the port city.A discussion meeting was held at city’s Muslim Institute Hall at 4 pm.
-Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University Dr Iftakher Uddin Chowdhury attended the discussion meeting as the chief guest. . Chittagong north and south district AL chalked out elaborate programmes at upazila and union levels which included discussion meetings on the life and works of Bangabandhu. Doa and Milad Mahfils were held at different mosques and other places of worships in the city and districts seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members, who were assassinated in the fateful night of August 15, 1975. Chittagong District Administration also organized a discussion meeting on the occasion at city’s Shilpakala Academy with Deputy Commissioner Mezbah Uddin in the chair. City Mayor A Z M Nasir Uddin was present as the chief guest. Chittagong District Administration organized various programmes including Milad Mahfil, Khatme Quran, special prayers at mosques and discussion meetings on the life and works of Bangabandhu at Shisu Academy. Essay competition and poetry recitation were also organized marking the Day.
Meanwhile, Raozan Upazila AL organized a discussion meeting on the occasion at Raozan College maidan with its upzila AL president Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury in the chair. Newly appointed Expatriate Welfare and Oversees Employment Minister Nurul Islam BSc was present as the chief guest. President of railway affairs parliamentary standing committee Fazle Karim Chowdhury MP addressed the function in special guest. Following the discussion meeting, a grand mezban program organized at Raozan college ground at lunch hour.
Chittagong University (CU), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU) and different colleges and private universities organized separate discussion meetings and Milad Mahfils in observance of the day.
Chittagong Press Club and Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) observed the National Mourning Day through organizing various programmes including Doa Mahfil and discussion meetings with club president Kolim Sarwar in the chair. Chittagong Press Club placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at the Moral of club premises at 11 am.
Local dailies brought out special supplements, while Chittagong centres of Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar aired special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) also observed the day through various programmes including discussion meeting, hoisting of national flag half mast at its all ward offices, special programme at all its Forkania Madrasa Compounds, poetry recitation, essay competition in all schools and colleges of CCC. It organized Doa Mahfil at Laldigi mosque at 10 am .
Meanwhile, city units of Bangladesh Communist Party, Gono Forum, Sector Commanders’ Forum, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Islamic Foundation, Civil Surgeon office, Chittagong, Bangabandhu Parisad Chittagong, Sheikh Rasel Smriti Parisad, Greater Chittagong Development Action Council, Projonmo-71 and Shahid Smriti Pathagar also arranged discussion meetings and Doa Mahfil in observance of the day.
