106 Kg gold haul: Biman official taken on remand

Court Correspondent :The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Sunday placed Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft mechanic Anis Uddin Bhuiyan on a five-day remand to quiz him in connection with the 106-kilogram gold seized from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Saturday.Magistrate SM Ashikur Rahman of the court passed the order after hearing when police produced the suspect with a 10-day remand prayer. On Saturday, the gold bars were seized from a flight of Bangladesh Biman that reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from Dubai. Customs intelligence of the airport detained accused Anis of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Senior ASP Alamgir Hossain Shimul said APBn detained Anis Uddin Bhuiyan of Bangladesh Biman suspecting his involvement in the smuggling.Later, from his mobile message APBn was informed about the gold bars, which was later seized from a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines coming from Dubai in the noon. Customs intelligence deputy director Mostafizur Rahman said, “Acting on a tip-off, custom intelligence and APBn seized the huge amount of gold bars from toilet of the Biman wrapping up with cloths.”Customs officials made the biggest ever haul of gold on July 24 last year when they seized 124 kg of gold worth Tk 54 crore at Dhaka airport. On March 25 this year, another consignment of 107 kg gold was seized at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong.
