Heavy rainfall that starting from Thursday night ended on Friday morning submerged many parts of the capital, causing immense sufferings to the city residents.
A minor girl, drowned in a pit filled with rainwater, died in Kathalbagan area on Friday.
Meem Akhter, 7, daughter of Ismail Hossain, a tea seller, met the tragic death near her house on the
Kathalbagan-Kalabagan Road. She was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared her dead. The rains started on Thursday and continued till Friday morning inundating Mirpur-11, Pallabi Bus Stand, Kalshi Road, Mirpur-10 to Kazipara, Bijoy Sarani, Malibagh, Shanir Akhra, Rayerbag, Shahjahanpur, Shantinagar, Shantibagh, Merul Badda, Demra, Rampura, Moghbazar and Mouchak, Nayapaltan, Motijheel and Rajarbagh. Many areas of the city went under knee-deep water due to overnight rainfall. Visiting to Shantinagar, Malibagh and Mouchak areas in the morning, it was found that many commuters wading through the submerged roads.
Stinks from drains mixed with the stagnant water added woes to the sufferings of the pedestrians.
A city resident said, many roads go under water even in moderate rainfall due to poor drainage system. Rickshaw and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers charge excessive fares, taking advantage of the inclement weather.
“Rain during monsoon is inevitable but it has become a curse for us as we have to endure immense sufferings in our everyday life during this season. We see no noticeable effort from our authorities concerned to minimize our sufferings,” said Shabnaz Akther, a resident of Shantinagar area.
Knee-deep rainwater submerged the Green Road slowing the vehicular movement, said a commuter, Sujon Mondol.
Jakir Hossain, a private job holder at Tejturi Bazaar, said that it took him an hour to reach Green Road due to slow movement of vehicles by the water submerged road.
“It took me one and half hours to get to Farmgate from Mohammadpur,” said Junayed Ahmed, another commuter.
According to Dhaka WASA officials, the existing inadequate storm drainage has a capacity of disposing 20 millimeter rainfall at a time. It gets clogged for hours to recede if the rainfall volume exceeds 40 millimeter.
According to the Met Office, it recorded 88 millimeters of rain in Dhaka city in the last 24 hours till 6 am on Friday while 146 millimeters in Rangpur, 34 millimeters in Chittagong, 36 millimeters in Khulna and 24 millimeters in Sylhet. According to the Met office’s weather forecast for 24 hours commencing 9 am on Friday, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
Heavy to torrential rainfalls may occur at places in Rangpur, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions while moderate to heavy falls at places elsewhere over the country, the forecast said.
