Assault on VC: Fresh protest rocks RU campus

RU Correspondent :Fresh protests were triggered on Sunday on the campus against threatening to Rajshahi University (RU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Mizanuddin and manhandling of some senior professors.As part of protest, the RU Deans’ Committee yesterday submitted a memorandum to the Chancellor of the University, Prime Minister and Education Minister protesting the incident. They demanded permanent expulsion of AL leaders Omar Faruque Chowdhury, MP, and Party’s Rajshahi City General Secretary Dablu Sarker from the party for their ‘virulent’ behaviour at VC’s office recently. Over three hundred teachers under the banner of ‘Progressive Teachers Society’ brought out a silent procession on the campus and joined a protest rally in front of the university Senate Bhaban at 11:00am.The two AL leaders were declared persona non grata on the campus from the rally. The teachers also launched mass signature campaign at the rally demanding immediate arrest and punishment to the AL leaders. Addressing at the rally, Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association President Prof. Ananda Kumar Saha said, “We should not give opportunity to outsiders to stretch their hands to the university’s sovereignty”.He urged the teachers, students and other staff members to take a bold stance against the incident.Prof. Mamunur Rashid Talukder, Acting Convener of Progressive Teachers’ Society and Prof. Dr Jahanur Rahman of Statistics Department also spoke at the rally. They demanded exemplary punishment to the humiliators.Protesting the incident, over 300 hundred teachers and students of Social Work Department of the university also formed a human chain at Paris Road on the campus at 11:30am.Addressing the human chain, Prof. Dr. Ashrafuzzman of the department termed the AL duo as the virus of the society as well as the party.At the same time over 350 teachers and students of Sociology Department staged a silent procession on the campus demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the AL leaders.At 12:00noon, about 200 teachers and students of Folklore Department also staged human chain demanding the permanent expulsion of AL MP and leaders from party immediately.They also declared the duo as persona non grata on the campus.Anupom Hera Mandol, Assistant Professor of the department terming the AL MP and leaders as terrorists said, they have no place on the campus.Talking to The New Nation, many students of the university also expressed their anger over the incident and declared to continue the protest until the duo get punishment.Mustafiz Rony, a student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department said, threatening and assaulting VC by outsiders is totally unacceptable. Sujon Ali, a student of English Department demanded exemplary punishment to the AL MP and leaders who assaulted the VC.As VC is our guardian, the incident reflects humiliation to 30,000 students of the university, said Shishir Mahmud, a student of Sociology Department.
