Staff Reporter :
Tens of thousands of people left Dhaka city on Thursday for their rural and urban homes where relatives were waiting to share the joys of Eid with them.
But the Eid passengers become worried when they get news of severe load shedding in the rural areas. The government supplies electricity as per requirement of the distribution entities in the capital, contrarily the picture in the rural areas is quite opposite.
The rural people get electricity connection easily, as the government has given priority to bring cent percent people under electricity connection by 2018.
But within few days of the connection, the rural people lost their interest, as they cannot do their jobs, including irrigating the crop lands, as per plan due to acute load shedding. Out of 24 hours, they get electricity for three to four hours only. Rather, since the date of giving electricity connection, the Power Development Board (PDB) and the Rural Electrification Board (REB) are giving them additional bills, said Abdul Halim Master of Hotia village in Sakhipura Upazila of Tangail district on Thursday over telephone.
The irate residents of Bherbari, Jadabpur, Chakdah and Dariapur have laid siege to the Upazila PDB office and ransacked it in protest whereas they are getting electricity for three to four hours only per day, said Shaidul Islam in his cell phone. He was present in that place during the incident.
Similar incident occurred in Kushtia, Brahmanbaria, Netrakona, Bogra, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Kishoreganj districts in the recent days.
Talking with The New Nation at Mohakhali inter-district bus terminal, Abul Bashar Mia, an employee of a private company in Dhaka said,”We are going to Sherpur upazila in Bogra district with three children, but there has been no electricity supply for two days.”
The village was out of electricity supply for 15 days in July due to blast of transformer. “I hope there will be no repetition during the Eid,” said Bashar Mia.
The government took endeavour to increase the power generation capacity, but failed to make a significant success in reducing the intensity of load shedding during the peak hours.
Power Division officials say that the power situation will improve soon.
