Sushasoner Jonno Nagarik (Sujon), a civil society organization for good governance, secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder said on Wednesday that free and fair elections was not possible under the present Election Commission.
Sujon also alleged that the recently held three city corporation elections of Barishal, Sylhet and Rajshahi were “government-controlled”.
Quoting recent remarks of the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda that there was no guarantee that there would be no irregularity in the next general elections, Badiul Alam said there was no way of holding the free and fair polls under the commission. Election Commission (EC) should play more firm and bold role for holding free and fair national election, Badiul Alam Majumdar said.
“The poll that was held on July 30, failed to meet our expectations,” he said asking the EC for taking coordinated plan ahead of the upcoming national poll.
He came up with the remarks at the press conference titled “What kind of public representatives we have got in Rajshahi and Sylhet city corporations’ poll,”
Shujan organised the press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
He suggested the EC for taking opinions of all concerned stakeholders including the government, political parties, EC officials, law enforcement, agencies, media and civil societies to strike a coordinated plan for the future elections.
Sujon central coordinator Dilip Kumar Sarkar and its Dhaka city unit vice-president Nazim Uddin, among others, were present at the press conference.
