Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed on Monday claimed that the elections in 399 Union Parishads, including 22 in the former enclaves, were held in a free and fair manner.
“The historical aspect of Monday’s election is to ensure voting rights of the former enclaves’ people of the three districts in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Panchagarh. They have franchised their voting rights in a free, fair and
peaceful manner,” the CEC made the claim at a post polls briefing at his Sher-e-Banglanagar office in Dhaka in the afternoon.
The voting in the now-defunct enclaves was held simultaneously along with the polling in some 380 more UPs across the country.
“Voting of two centers was suspended as the law and order situation went out of control of the presiding officers,” Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed said.
On the basis of reports of the election monitoring cell and media, the EC has initiated immediate measures to avoid any untoward incident during the voting, the CEC said.
The CEC has also thanked people who helped in holding the election in a fair and congenial atmosphere.
In some 200 UPs, elections were held in a few polling stations where the voting was earlier cancelled during the staggered countrywide UP elections held earlier this year.
Full-fledged election was held in 59 UPs, while there will be by-elections to one chairman post and some member posts, reserved seats set aside exclusively for women in 67 UPs. Some 65 UPs are going to polls as two candidates bagged equal votes in the countrywide UP elections.
