Road accidents: Four of a family among 12 killed

UNB, Dhaka :Twelve people, including four of a family, were killed in road accidents in Brahmanbaria, Comilla and Feni districts on Thursday.In Brahmanbaria, five people, including four members of a family, were killed and two people injured in a collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Sarail upazila in the afternoon.The deceased were identified as Shahjahan Mia, 34, of Gachhiura village in the upazila, his wife Rokhsana, 30, their son Ashraful, 10, daughter Swapna, 8, and auto-rickshaw driver Hasem Mia of the village.Shahjahan’s another daughter Ratna, 5, miraculously survived the accident.Officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station Ali Arshad said the Sylhet-bound truck crashed into the three-wheeler at Islamabad on Dhaka-Sylhet highway around 5pm, leaving three of the occupants dead on the spot and two others injured.The injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital where two others succumbed to their injuries.Police seized the truck, but its driver and his helper managed to flee the scene.The tragedy struck the victims while they were going to attend a wedding party, said the OC.In Feni, three people were killed and three others injured as a bus collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in Sadar upazila in the afternoon.One of the deceased was identified as three-wheeler driver Mohammad Sujon, a resident of Damarpara village in Chouddagram upazila of Comilla district.Police said the accident happened at Dulamia Rastarmatha on Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 5:30pm that left a person dead on the spot and five others injured.The injured were rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital where two of them died.Two of the injured-Salma Begum Sumi, 40, and his son Apu, 8 — were later shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital following deterioration of their condition.In Comilla, four people were killed in separate road accidents in Burichang and Muradnagar upazilas.
