Four killed in train mishap in city

Four persons were killed and 16 others injured as trains ploughed into crowd in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area on Thursday morning. Of them, one died on the spot while three others in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after admission.Of the deceased, two have been identified as Abdul Malek, 60, and Monowara Begum, 50.DMCH police outpost Inspector Mozammel Haq has confirmed about the number of deaths. The accident took place near the Karwan Bazar fish market around 9am when Dhaka-bound Jamuna Express Train from Mymensingh and Chittagong-bound Karnafuli Express from Dhaka passed the area at the same time from the opposite direction, giving no chance to the crowds, who were on the rail tracks, to disperse, Tejgaon police station Officer-in-Charge Mazharul Islam said.One died on the spot and 16 others were injured. Of the injured, three are women. Fish traders gather on the railway tracks at Karwanbazar everyday for buying and selling their fish, confirmed Kamalapur Railway Police Station OC Abdul Majid.The crowds took their position on the land between two tracks and were dashed by the running trains while jostling among them. At least eight people were injured, said Railway’s Assistant Director (Operations) Md Saidul Islam.Eight of the injured were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said the hospital’s police outpost inspector Mozammel Haque. The identities of the two deceased could not be known instantly.
