Public Works Department will build a eye catching park with modern amenities at the traditional Agrabad Jamboori field in Agrabad in the city at a cost of Tk.20 crores.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Engr Mosharraf Hossain formally laid the foundation stone of the Park on Friday morning .
In his brief deliverations at the foundation laying ceremony, the Minister said there is no open areas in the port city to enjoy time for amusement and leisure period and the people of the port city will get this scope of enjoying such leisure time if this park is built.
He said 50 percent govt employees will reside in the Agrabad govt colony gradually where there is a plan for constructing 20 storied residential buildings .
As such a recreational park is essential in this posh area, he added.
He also mentioned that a Novo Theater centre, walkaway, lake, sitting place f or visitors, cafeteria will also be established inside the park.
Additional Chief Engineer of PWD Humayun Kabir Chowdhury presided the foundation laying ceremony.
Senior officials of PWD, Chittagong, local councilors, AL leaders were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile,The residents of Agrabad areas of the city formed human chain in front of Chittagong Press Club on Friday evening protesting the proposed construction of Jamboori Park .
The human chain was formed immediate after the laying of foundation of the park at Jamboori ground by the Housing & Public Works Engr. Mosharraaf Hossain on Friday morning.
Huge numbers of city dwellers participated the human chain. Among others,m ward councilor Md. Habibul Hoque, Hasan Murad Biplob, women councilor Ferdousi Akbar, AL leader Jahidul Alam Minto, Port CBA leader Nazebul Islam, Jubo League leader Rashed, Md. Shahid, sechasebokleader Md. Maruf spoke in it.
The human chain was told that the historical ground of Jamboori field located under Bandar, EPZ and Patenga constituent areas and 90 percent land of the ground are occupied by different govt and private organizations like central drug laboratory, BSTI, Labour Directorate office, Maa & Shishu General Hospital , medical college and govt residential colonies and only 10 percent land are vacant of the total ground.
On entry point of the ground , a large children park is located . The speakers in the human chain said there is no playing ground within the areas of No.4 & 5 wards of Agrabad and the local youths use this vacant land beside the children park as playing ground . About 5 to 6 lakh people reside in this entire area of Agrabad including establishment of 12 govt and private residential areas . The major portion of the residents consists of youths and students .
The speakers also mentioned that in earlier days, this ground was used a playing ground for football and most of the national football players came out from this ground.
If this ground is turned into a park, the youth community of the society will be deprieved of sports like football, cricket and annual sports functions and may be derailed towards unsocial actitivities , the speakers added. The speakers also mentioned the names of national football stars viz. Aslam, Sabbir, Satyajit Roy, Yousuf who get opportunities in national teams through practicing football in the Jamboori ground.
The speakers urged upon the concerned authorities to cancel the proposed plan for park at Jamboori ground for the better interest of the society.
