UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Sunday suggested his party to forge a new and united platform with all democratic forces to make their movement for restoration of democracy a success.
“Restoration of democracy, established by Ziaur Rahman, is now the biggest challenge for us. We must restore democracy under Khaleda Zia’ s leadership,” he said.
He further said, “Under the current context of the geopolitics, it’s impossible for BNP to do this with its lone efforts. That’s why we must form a new and united platform with all democratic forces, individuals, civil society members, professionals, intellectuals, students, workers and youths to make our movement a success.”
Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion in presence of party chairperson Khaleda Zia. BNP arranged the programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the 35th death anniversary of its founder late President Ziaur Rahman. Khaleda was present at the programme as the chief guest, but she did not spoke at the event. She heard the speeches of her party leaders sitting with the audience. Mentioning that militancy is becoming a major problem for Bangladesh, Moudud suggested the government to restore democracy by holding a free and fair election and take united efforts with all parties to get rid of it. “BNP hates militancy and extremism. We’ll help you if you take any step to root out militancy.” He questioned why the government is not arresting the perpetrators of recent secret killings of bloggers, imams, priests, and other innocent people. Speaking at the programme, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Bangladesh has now turned into a failed and undemocratic country. “We must get rid of the situation by ousting the fascist and undemocratic regime through a united movement.”
He alleged that plots are on to eliminate BNP and reestablish a one-party rule by arresting their chairperson and other leaders in ‘false cases’. “We’ve no alternative to waging a strong movement to foil all plots and keep our leader Khaleda Zia in politics.” Fakhrul said the government is trying to malign BNP by carrying out a ‘false’ campaign involving the party with Israel. “BNP leader Aslam Chowdhury met Israel’s Likud Party leader Mendi N Safadi at Agra mayor’s office in India. Are the Agra mayor and the organisation which arranged the programme involved with a plot? The government must answer the question.” Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, another BNP standing committee member, said the government is trying to create confusion among their party leaders and activists after having failed to weaken BNP by resorting to repressive acts. He urged the party men not to get misguided by media reports against the party and its leaders as it is part of the government’s plot.
