Footpath extortion is behind the AL leader murder: DB

Awami League leader Abu Bakkar Siddique Habu was killed over collection of extortion from sidewalk shops in Jatrabari area of the capital.
On Wednesday (August 31), Mushfiqur Rahman Fahim, Vice-President of Jatrabari Thana Jubo Dal, suspected mastermind of the Habu murder case, was arrested by the DB Wari Division from Shiksha Bhaban crossing area under Shahbag police station of the capital.
Detective Branch (DB) Chief Mohammad Haroon Or Rashid confirmed this information in a press conference at DMP’s media center on Thursday noon (September 1)
He said that the arrested Fahim used to extort money from various shops and footpaths in Jatrabari area. Habu and Fahim had been in conflict for a long time regarding the collection of this subscription. Because of this, Fahim plans to kill Habu.
On the evening of August 16, Abu Bakr Siddique Habu arrived in front of Nirala Hardware on Shahid Farooq Road in Jatrabari and he was surrounded by Fahim and his accomplices. They attacked Habu with sharps knives, chapatis and switch gear knives.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College & Hospital where he died under treatment.
Interrogating Fahim, the DB chief said that he and the victim Habu had a conflict for a long time based on political and territorial dominance. Apart from this, there was a conflict between them about the footpath subscription and local dis-cable business.
Due to these conflicts, Fahim planned and killed Habu.
Fahim has been sent to the court with remand application. He also said that if the remand application is granted, it will be known about the others involved with the murder.
