Floods hit 155,000 farmers in Sylhet

About 155,000 farmers have been badly affected as their croplands of Transplant Aman paddy has been inundated in the recent floods in Sylhet division, official sources said.
According to the DAE statistics, out of the total 253,850 hectares of cultivated land, About 50,000 hectares of Transplant Aman paddy remained inundated for about 3 weeks, causing a huge crop loss in the 4 districts of Sylhet region.
However, the possibility of recouping the loss is almost nil although the rains came to halt days ago and water started receding in most of the areas, a number of farmers said.
Excessive rains, coupled with rolling down of water from the upstream in the Indian territory during over 3 weeks inundated the said cropland in the 4 districts, said the Deputy Director at the Sylhet divisional office of DAE Md. Mamunur Rashid.
Of the 114,945 hectares of land, where Transplant Aman was cultivated in 12 upazilas of Sylhet district, 28,280 hectares were inundated affecting about 53,000 farmers, the official informed.
In Moulvibazar district’s 5 upazilas over 1300 hectares had been inundated out of the total 59,960 hectares affecting 11,795 farmers while in 7 upozilas of Habiganj district, the crop on 6,780 hectares had gone under water out of the total 53,830 hectares affecting over 24,000 farmers.
In Sunamganj district, 16,515 hectares of Transplant Aman remained under water as yet against the total 40,175 hectares while the number of affected farmers is 65,785 in 11 upozilas, the official added.
A farmer from Golapganj upazila’s Turukbag village Abdul Bari said this afternoon, there is no hope to saving the crop as I had cultivated paddy this season on about 12 kiar (4 hectares) land.
Same is the situation in and around our villages, he added. It would be almost impossible to replanting on the lands even if the water recedes totally in 3 or 4 days, said Ataur Rahman of Balaganj upazila.
Crisis of Aman seed plants has already become a serious crisis, Ataur said.
However, the official said some of the farmers would be able to collect Aman plants from alternative sources.
We would supply some saplings to some farmers, he added.
25 taxpayers to get reception: A total of 25 income taxpayers are going to get honour in Sylhet Division comprising city and Four districts for the fiscal 2014-15.
The Department of Income Tax will give the honour marking the National Income Tax Day scheduled to be celebrated on Monday.
According to the sources concerned, National Board of Revenue (NBR) has already published a gazette mentioning their names. In two categories of taxpayers like highest and long-term, they will be given the honour.
Mahmudur Rahman, Commissioner of Sylhet Tax Zone, told that an elaborate programmes has been chalked out to celebrate the day.
A colourful rally will be brought out from the premises of Tax Building and that will be ended into the Sylhet auditorium after parading some of the city streets with some elephants and band party.
On the other hand, a week-long Income Tax Fair-2015 will begin for the fifth time in the divisional city on Wednesday next aimed at inspiring the taxpayers in paying income tax.
Mahmudur Rahman said the fair will be organised at Mohammed Ali Gymnasium. Massive preparation has been adopted to make the fair a total success.
He said the fair would remain open from 10 am to 5 pm every day from September 16 to 22. New taxpayers will able to collect their tax identification numbers (TINs) while the existing TIN holders will be able to submit their income tax returns at the fair.
Income Tax officials would be there to provide advice and suggestion regarding income tax, TIN certificates and assist in filling in Income Tax Return forms.
Besides, Janata, Sonali banks will set up their booths to help pay income tax.
“We are very much hopeful about more tax collection in the forthcoming current fiscal as very much effective measures were adopted,” he added
