Flood victims to make a turnaround: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said her government has taken all the necessary steps so that the flood-hit people can stand on their own feet again.
“The recent floods have caused huge damages to homes and crops. To ensure food security, we’ve already started procuring food grains from abroad so that there’s no food crisis,” she said after receiving cheques of donations to the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund from various government and private organisations at her office.
Sheikh Hasina said directives have already been given to rebuild houses for those who have lost their homes to river erosion following flood.
She said whenever AL assumes office it works for strengthening the democratic process and democratic institutions alongside moving the country towards economic prosperity and development through fulfilling people’s basic needs.
Mentioning that the development pace continued in the country for the continuation of the present government’s rule, the Prime Minister said people are now getting its benefits.
She said the main principle of her government is to ensure people’s economic development at the grassroots level as well as improve their socio-economic conditions. “In line with that, we formulate our plans, frame budget and implement it. As a result, the common people are getting its benefits.”
Turning to natural disasters, Hasina said, “We’ll have to move ahead facing these natural calamities and we’ve already proved that we could tackle these disasters successfully.”
She said all kinds of steps have been taken to help and rehabilitate the flood-affected people so that they can stand again on their own feet. “Whenever we assume office, our government remains very alert and works sincerely so that there’s minimal loss of lives and property (due to natural disasters),” she added.
The Prime Minister said the donation from various public and private organisations to her relief and welfare fund will be helpful not only to the victims of any natural disaster, but also various sections of people like poets, artistes, litterateurs and journalists will get assistance during their needs.
“I think your donations will be helpful for the cause of distressed humanity and through your donation, your sense of humanity has become visible,” she said, adding that the lone goal of her government is to ensure that no one remains homeless and people get health and medical facilities and thus lead a better life.
Recalling the role of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in rebuilding the war-ravaged country, Hasina said had he remained alive, Bangladesh could have been a prosperous and developed country within 10 years of independence.
She also renewed her vow to turn Bangladesh into a hunger -and poverty -free mid-income country by 2021 and a prosperous developed one in South Asia by 2041.
The organisations that donated cheques include Prime Minister’s Office, Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare ministries, BTRC, SSF, NSI, Access to Information under the PMO, Bangladesh Administrative Services Association, Krishibid Institution, Bangladesh, Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Jagannath University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Noakhali Science and Technology University and NCC Bank Ltd.
Besides, Essential Drugs Company Ltd, Confidence Group of Industries, Haque Group of Industries, bKash, Bangladesh Palli Bidyut Sramik Karmachari League, Green Delta Insurance, Khulna District Bar Association, Foreign Office Spouses Association and Satsanga Bangladesh, Ghatail of Tangail, Virgo Global, Banoful and Company, Awami League Malaysia unit and former Chhatra League leaders of Khulna city also donated cheques of donations to the PM’s Relief and Welfare Fund.
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim, State Minister for Health Zahid Maleque, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki, PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim were present on the occasion.
