Flood situation worsens in Gaibandha

Many river embankments in Gaibandha district collapsed due to onrush of water from the upstream in the last three days that badly affected more than 500 houses in three unions.
The extensive loss of standing seasonal crops, local sources said, made farmers severely anxious.  
The flood victims are crying for relief materials, dry food and pure drinking water.
Aysha Begum, a resident of Madoner Para union under Saghata Upazila, said, “We are in severe trouble. My house has been inundated. I cannot do anything in my house. We are eight members and living in a
house. We are passing crucial moments. We have no food.”
Pavel Patwary, resident of Fazalpur union under Fulchari Upazila, said, “The flood waters affected my vegetables and other seasonal crops. I don’t know what shall I do?. I have lost everything. I request the government to extend its helping hands to us.”
Sources said that water started entering the low-lying areas in the basin of the Teesta, Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers.
The officials of Water Development Board said that the river water level could cross the danger level anytime.
Assistant Engineer of Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre Ripon Karmaker told The New Nation on Monday that the flood situation in Gaibandha did not cross the danger level.
“The officials of Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre are working to give appropriate information about the flood situation for creating awarness among the flood affected areas’ people,” Ripon Karmaker said.
Meanwhile, the river erosion also took an alarming turn at Sundarganj, Fulchari and Shaghata upazilas where many establishments are now on the verge of being devoured.
Haldia, Modonerpara, Gobindapar, Chinirpatal, Gobidhi, Banshhata and Miapara villages of Saghata Upazila are under the threat of the river erosion. Hundreds of people of these areas are passing their days with extreme fear. They have asked the administration to save their assets.
North and South Sripur under Sripur union, Choygharia under Konchibari union, Hazarirhat under Horipur union, Charitabari, Bochagari, Horipur Gheyaghat, Kishamat Sadar, Belka, Nwabganj, Kapasia, Chandipur and Tarapur villages of Sundarganj Upazila are facing severe river erosion.
The Brahmaputra River surrounded Kawabanda, West Nischintapur, Chandanswar, West, East and North Khatiamari, Tinthopa, Paglar Char, Bulbuli and Jighabari villages under Fulchari Upazila are at risk of river erosion. Some parts of the areas are also at risk of the erosion. Hundreds of people lost their houses and lands by this time.
Meanwhile, the local people blamed the WDB for their negligence in taking appropriate steps to save the people and their assets.
Chairman of Holdia Union Yakub Ali said about one thousand people of his union suffered most due to the flood. He alleged that the WDB officials did not take proper measures.
Executive Engineer of WDB in Gaibandha said, the WDB is working to check river erosion at different points of the district. The WDB, Gaibandha unit sent the proposal of a project for Tk 285 crore to the ministry for approval. After getting approval of the project, the WDB will build permanent embankments.
Deputy Commissioner of Gaibandha Abdus Samad said that Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya visited the many places of the district. The Minister assured the people of the district that he would try to approve project to prevent river erosion, the DC said.
