Flood situation worsens further in six districts

Staff Reporter :The flood situation has worsened further in six districts of the country due to incessant rains and on-rush of water from upstream. Several lakhs of people of Kurigram, Netrakona, Bogra, Naogaon, Jamalpur and Brahmanbaria districts have been marooned many dwelling houses damaged and road communications collapsed. The farmers are worried due to extensive damage caused to the Aman paddy, vegetables and other seasonal crops. On the other hand, about six hundred schools of the districts have remained closed, flood-hit and people took shelter in these institutions. Although the flood-hit people are passing their days with miseries along with their children and cattle, the distribution of relief items is insufficient. The flood victims in several areas did not receive any relief till now. In some areas, the local administration is facing hindrance in distributing the relief materials due to collapse of rural roads. In the absence of adequate relief, the flood-affected people are facing acute crisis of food and drinking water. In Kurigram, at least one lakh people were marooned, as over 200 villages under 32 unions of the eight upazilas in the district, and 30 educational institutions at Roumari and Rajibpur upazila were flooded. Fresh areas of the upazilas were also submerging till filing of the report in last evening. A box culvert at Gachhidangha under Bhurungamari upazila has been washed away due to overflow of the floodwater. At least 150 families at Chilmari upazila were displaced from their homes. The road communications in most of the areas collapsed. The flood victims are also facing acute crisis of pure drinking water and dry food. They are deprived of relief items.  According to Department of Agriculture, transplanted Aman and vegetables on at least 17 thousand acres of land have gone under floodwater. Sub Assistant Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) of Kurigram Sabibur Rahman said that the Brahmaputra River was flowing 11 cm above the danger level at Chilmari point and 14 cm at Noonkhaya point, while the Teesta was flowing 6 cm above at danger level at Kaunia point and the Dharla was flowing 22 cm in Setu point. The other rivers Dudkumer, Phulkumer, Sonavory, Kaljani, Jalchera and Dharoni were also flowing above the danger levels in the district. In Netrakona, at least 80 villages of seven unions under Purbadhala upazila have been inundated due to collapse of an embankment of the WDB at Rajakhali in the upazila. The flood situation in Netrakona Sadar, Mohanganj, Kalmakanda and Durgapur is unchanged, as the water in Someshwar, Dholai and other rivers were flowing above the danger levels. Over one lakh people in the upazilas of the district were marooned, while the educational activities in about four hundred intuitions in the seven upazilas remained shut due to the flood. The hill downpour has been continuing for eight more days and for this vast areas of the lands of transplanted Aman and vegetables went under floodwater. Fishes of thousands of ponds in the upazila have been washed away. In Naogaon, the flood situation has deteriorated further in the district. About three lakhs people of the district have been marooned, while nearly six thousand hectares of rice crops were flooded. Rural roads also went under floodwater.Fresh areas in the district were flooded on Saturday, as the floodwater entered the areas through the river erosion at Mirapur of Atrai. UNO of Atrai upazila Hemanta Henri and UNO of Raninagar upazila Monirul Islam Patwari said that the low-lying areas of seven unions of the two upazilas were affected by the flood. Water-logging has been created in several parts of the Naogaon district town, as the water of the Jamuna River was entering there through water outlet of the town protection embankment.  In Bogra, the flood situation worsened in the district, as the Jamuna River was flowing 9 cm above danger level in the district, while Bangali River’s flow was 18 cm in Sariakandi point. At least 20 villages under nine unions of Sariakandi upazila were inundated due to the floodwater. In Jamalpur, the Jamalpur town protection embankment collapsed at three places in almost half a kilometer. For this reason, important establishments in the district town, including residence of the Deputy Commissioner, are now under threat. The WDB was dumping sacks of sand to protect the embankment.In Brahmanbaria, the transplanted Aman and seedlings in at least one thousand acres of lands in Kosba, Akhaura and Ashuganj upazilas in the district were damaged due to the flood. If the flood situation continues for several days, the farmers of the upazilas will face further damage. Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture of Brahmanbaria Md Bashir Uddin said that they prepared a list of the flood victims and sent the list to the ministry.
