The people of Dharla River shoal in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts are badly affected by the fourth phase flood as the water flows above the danger level.
The water level of Dharla Rriver in Kurigram was 31 cm and 19 cm above danger level in Lalmonirhat around 6am this morning, said Water Development Board officials.
The flood situation is deteriorating further due to heavy rains and onrush water from the upstream.
More than 15,000 families of 30 villages in Dharal River shoal of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram have been affected by floods being forced to live in inhuman condition.
Water has risen from knee to waist deep in their houses. Many had to leave their homes and take shelter on government roads, WDB dams and other safe high places.
Crop fields and roads in these areas have also been submerged. Domestic animals of many flood-hit families have been washed away.
Nazrul Islam, 56, a flood victim from Basuria village at Barabari union of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila, said they had to leave their houses and take shelter on government roads.
They had to use customised boats made of banana trees as transport due to the roads in the village being submerged under the flood waters.
Khodeza Bewa, 55, a flood victim from Char Shimulbari village at Shimulbari union of Kurigram’s Phulbari upazila, said one of her goats and several chickens were washed away in the floodwaters. They left their houses and took shelter in the WDB dam, she said.
The flood control dam of the WDB is also under threat of being devoured by water at Kurul and Basuria areas of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila. The dam might wash away anytime flooding new areas.
Umar Farukh, chairman of Holokhana Union Parishad in Kurigram Sadar Upazila, told this correspondent that the dam at Sardob village had not been repaired in a while. The Executive Engineer of WDB has been appealed to more than once but no effective action has been taken, he alleged.
Ariful Islam, executive engineer of the Kurigram WDB said the dam at Sardob village was saved from erosion by dumping geo-bags a month ago. It is not possible to fully repair the damaged dam without a dry season, he said.
Mizanur Rahman, executive engineer of the Lalmonirhat WDB said the flood situation could escalate further if rains and upstream water do not stop. WDB officials are visiting different areas of the flood-hit Dharla shoal to inspect and manage the dams, he said.
