Overall flood situation in char areas and Brahmaputra river basins in four upazilas of Gaibandha district has improved significantly as the river has marked fall on Tuesday.
The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water level of the Brahmaputra river has decreased by 24 cm during the period and the river was flowing 19 cm below its danger level at Phulchharighat point of the district.
Mahbubur Rahman, executive engineer of BWDB here expected that with the continuous fall of water level in Brahmaputra river, the flood situation would improve further in the district and the life of the people would come to normalcy within very short time. To alleviate the sufferings of the flood affected people, particularly the poor and the distressed, the relief distribution activities have been intensified at Sundarganj, Sadar, Phulchhari and Shaghata upazila, said district relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali
The relief distribution programme and other monitoring and coordination works have been continuing in the upazilas of the district.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has allotted 825 tonnes of rice and cash TK 28 lakh for flood victims of the district so far.
Meanwhile the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Padma and Surma-Kushiyara rivers are in falling trend in the country while the Ganges river is in rising trend. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are likely to be in falling trend for next 72 hours.
The Ganges river is likely to continue rising, while the Padma river is likely to continue falling for next 72 hours, according to flood forecasting and warning center of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) till 9am on Tuesday.
In the last 24 hours water level of Jamuna at Kazipur and Serajgonj fell 23 cm but it is still above danger level 6 cm.
In Comilla, significant rainfall had been recorded of 26 cm at 09:00 AM of Tuesday.
WDB officials expected that flood situation would improve further in the districts and situation will come to normal level with in short time.
