Flood hits vast areas in Sylhet, Sunamganj

Flash flood, triggered by torrential rains for the last couple of days and onrush of hill waters, has inundated vast areas in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
In Sylhet, vast areas of Goainghat, Jaintapur, Kanaighat and Companiganj upazilas were submerged, leaving many people marooned. The rise of water level in all major rivers, including Surma and Kushiyara, has worsened the situation.
Sylhet Water Development Board sources said the Surmar River was flowing 25 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat point.
Road link between Goainghat upazila headquarter and different unions was snapped as the roads went under water.
Goainghat upazila nirbahi officer said the low-lying areas were flooded due to onrush of hill water.
In Sunamganj, low-lying areas of Sadar, Doarabazar and Chhatak uapzilas were inundated by fresh flood.
According to Water Development Board, the Surma river is flow 93 cm above the water-level at Shologhar point and 30 cm above at Chhatak point. Some 266 mm of rain has been recoded in the district in the last 24 hours till Monday.
Meanwhile, over 100 houses were damaged following the collapse of flood protection embankment of the Khasiamara river in Doarabazar upazila.
Water Development Board executive engineer said more areas will be flooded if the rain continues. Sand extractions in all sand quarries have been suspended due to the flood, rendering over 50,000 labourers jobless.
