Flood damages crops worth Tk 587cr in N dists

The recent floods have damaged standing crops on 76,848 hectares of land worth about Taka 587 crore in eight affected northern districts along the Brahmaputra basin, sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.
A total of over 5.33 lakh farmers have been affected by floods to incur huge crop losses in 39 riverside upazilas of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Bogra, Sirajganj and Natore districts in the northern region this year.
The damaged crops include T-Aman worth Taka 496.46 crore on 66,482 hectares of land, Aman seedbed worth Taka 23.21 lakh on 929 hectares, Aus rice worth Taka 32.55 crore on 4,647 hectares, vegetables worth Taka 46.58 crore on 1,931 hectares, Buna Aman worth Taka 10.15 crore on 2,810 hectares and other crops worth Taka 48.05 lakh on 49.2 hectares of land.
According to the DAE sources, floods have damaged crops worth over Taka 3.55 crore on 396 hectares of land affecting 4,370 farmers in Rangpur and on 500 hectares of land worth about Taka 3.81 crore affecting 3,542 farmers in Nilphamari districts.
The floods also have damaged standing crops on 32,398 hectares of land and worth over Taka 24.07 crore affecting 43,707 farmers in Kurigram and on 3,005 hectares worth over Taka 23.57 crore affecting 37,640 farmers in Gaibandha districts.
Standing crops on 604.5 hectares worth over Taka 5.25 crore have been damaged by the recent floods affecting 8,500 farmers in Lalmonirhat and on 19,056 hectares of land worth over Taka 143.81 crore affecting over 1.29 lakh farmers in Bogra districts.
Besides, floods have damaged standing crops on 356 hectares of land worth over Taka 2.02 crore affecting 7,500 farmers in Natore and on 20,622 hectares of land worth over Taka 16.58 crore affecting over 1.52 lakh farmers in Sirajganj districts.
Meanwhile, the DAE in association with other agriculture related departments and organisations have already prepared late variety Aman seedbeds at different places for distributing those among the affected farmers to assist them in recouping the crop looses.
Under the programme, the DAE has prepared Aman seedbeds at Tazhat Agriculture Training Institute, Burirhat Horticulture Centre, Rangpur Regional Stations of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute and Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture in Rangpur.
Besides, Aman seedbeds have been prepared at Agriculture Training Institutes at Gaibandha and Iswardi in Pabna and Horticulture Centres at Natore, Kallyanpur in Chapainawabganj and Tebunia in Pabna districts.
Joint Director for Rangpur Regional Office of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) Asadur Rahman said BADC have adequate stocks of seeds and fertilisers to assist the flood-affected farmers when gets government directions.
Talking to BSS today, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said the Aman seeds were sowed in these seedbeds mostly from September 1 to 4 last for distribution of about three-week old seedling among the affected farmers.
Acting Rangpur Regional Additional Director of the DAE Zulfiqar Haider informed the national news agency today that the government has taken steps to provide necessary assistance to the flood affected farmers.
Officials and experts of DAE and other agriculture related departments and research organisations have been suggesting the affected farmers for transplanting late variety Aman seedling anew and cultivating early variety ‘mash kalai’, vegetables, maize and other crops on their lands after recession of floodwater, he added.
