Flash floods damage 30,000 hects Aman field in Sylhet Divn

Transplant Aman crops on at least 30,390 hectares of land in Sylhet Division were affected in the ongoing flash floods, caused by the excessive rains and rolling waters from the hills in the upper region on the borders.
 However, the situation may improve with lesser rains in days, officials hoped.
Sources in the DAE informed, most of the Aus and Aman paddy crop in Gowainghat, Golapganj, Balaganj, Fenchuganj, Beanibazar, Companiganj and Jaintapur upozilas have been inundated during last few days’ flash floods. Besides, some areas in Golapganj, Kanaighat and Zakiganj upazilas were also affected.
Farmer of village Dubag of Beanibazar upazila Abdul Hasib said about 60 per cent Aman crop land went under water during the last few days. Most of the Aman land would lose the crops, apprehended Saidur Mia, a farmer from Balaganj upazila. However, some farmers hope to replant some lands if weather gets changed within days, he added.
Contacted, the Deputy Director of the DAE’s,
 Sylhet divisional office Md. Mamunur Rahsid told this correspondent Transplant Aman were cultivated on 288,300 hectares in the 4 districts of Sylhet division where over 30,390 hectares were inundated as yet. However, if the flood situation improves soon, many farmers would be able to replant their lands, he added.
However, the officials said the crop loss would be less if the improving situation continues for days together with stoppage of rains. Besides, some farmers will be able to transplant the Aman paddy afresh on the major affected croplands.
The officials hope the situation would be improved further with lesser rains and sunny weather. The extent of crop loss will also come down significantly, they added.
Of the total inundated area, highest 19983 hectares are in Sylhet and 9,465 hectares are in Sunamganj district.
 However, the farmers will be able to cultivate the Transplant Aman crops till late September, said Mamunur.
