Fix rawhide prices within 48 hrs: Tofail

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed directed the tanners to fix prices of raw hide of sacrificial animals within Wednesday amid demands from hide traders and stakeholders.
 “We do not want to fix raw hide prices, rather, you (tanners) should fix it in line with the market rate,” he told this at a meeting with the leather industry stakeholders on Monday.
He said: “Fix a reasonable price so that people can get a good bargain of it and traders can make a good business.” The Minister said that the price would be announced through a press briefing on Wednesday.
Tanners last year fixed the prices for the skins of sacrificial animals fixed last year by the tammers were lowest in five years.
They fixed the price of salted cow hides at Tk 50-55 per square foot for capital Dhaka and at Tk 40-45 for rest of the country.
Tofail also said that the government has taken necessary measures to prevent the smuggling of rawhides from the country.
 “The Home Ministry has already instructed the police and BGB to carry out strict vigilance across the borders to check smuggling of rawhides,” he added.
The vigilance will be there even after Eid, he said.
Leaders of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association, Bangladesh Tanners’ Association and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association were present at the meeting held at the Commerce Ministry.
