Five more lives lost in road crashes

Staff Reporter :At least five people were killed and many others injured in separate road accidents in Magura, Savar and Bandarban districts on Monday.In Magura, three people were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in WAPDA area in Sreepur upazila in the morning.Two of the deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 35, of Jhenidah and Zillur Rahman, 38, of Manikganj.Police said the accident occurred when a Benapole-bound passenger bus (S.Alam Paribahan) collided head-on with a truck, leaving three dead on the spot and 20 others injured. The injured were rushed to Magura Sadar Hospital.Jahangir Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Magura Police Station confirmed the incident.In Savar, a female readymade garment (RMG) worker was killed and another one injured as a bus rammed them in front of Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) in Ashulia in the morning.The deceased was identified as Mukta Begum, 40, a worker of Youngone Savar Dyeing and Finishing Company Limited at DEPZ.Quoting local people, police said the bus carrying the DEPZ worker rammed the duo while they were crossing Nabinagar-Kaliakoir Highway around 7:45 am, leaving Mukta dead on the spot.Injured, Taslima was rushed to Savar Upazila Health Complex.Police later recovered the body of Mukta and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.Infuriated by the news, workers of DEPZ took to the street and blocked the highway, disrupting the traffic movement for about an hour.T hey also set fire on the bus and vandalised 10/12 vehicles of DEPZ. Later, two fire fighting units managed to extinguish the blaze. Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police went into action and quelled the situation by dispersing the agitating workers. Badrul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed the incident.Meanwhile, a tourist was killed and 10 others received fatal injuries when their microbus plunged into a ditch in Soilopropat area in the early morning.The deceased was identified as Kabir Hossain, son of Ahad Hossain, a resident of the city’s Gulshan area. Police sources said, a tourist microbus was returning to Bandarban town from Nilgiri on Sunday night. It plunged into a roadside ditch when the driver lost control over steering, leaving one dead on the spot and 10 injured. On information, police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and sent the injured to the Bandarban Sadar Hospital.
