Five burnt as gas pipe explodes in city

At least five persons, including four of a family, sustained burn injuries in an explosion due to a leakage in a gas pipe of a house in the city’s Ashkona under Dakkhin Khan Police Station on Sunday morning.
The victims have been identified as Rehana Akhter, 42, daughter of Afsana Akhter,19, sons Rezwan Ahmed, 18, and Tanvir Ahmed, 12, and the domestic help Sakhina Begum, 42.
The injured were rushed to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said DMCH Police Outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque.
Fire Service Control Room Official Brojen Kumar Das said “The gas pipe, connected to the kitchen’s stove, probably had a leak at Ashkona When the connection was turned on by the domestic help, a fire broke out with an explosion.”
The local people have put out the fire by the time before the fire service personnel reached the spot, he said.
Rezwan Ahmed said, the explosion occurred when Sakhina was trying to light the stove around 7:30am.
