Fishes at least Tk 3 lac were killed when the miscreants applied poison in three ponds at Mamunshia village in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah on Sunday night. Village enmity might be the reason behind the incident, the police primarily said.
Jahirul Islam, son of Faridur Rahman of Kagmari village said, he had been cultivating fish on three leasing ponds for past six years. A gang of miscreants had been demanding toll to him for a long time.
A few days back they had warned him to give lesson if the toll was not paid to them. In the night of Sunday they have applied poison on his all three ponds leaving all the fish and fish species and other water born lives dead.
In the morning he was informed by the locals that the dead fishes were floating there. He was preparing for filing case with the police station.
Kotchandpur police station sub inspector Brajaballav Sadhu when contacted said, they were informed by the locals verbally, while no written complaint was received so far. The incident might take place due to village enmity.
Police might take legal steps on the basis of any written complaint, the sub inspector said.
