10 days endless rainfall: Fisheries sector facing loss of Tk 2.14 cr in Khagrachhari

Khagrachhari Hill District has been severely damaged due to endless heavy rainfall for 10 days. The lowlands along the river side and canals have been flooded. Thousands of families were held in several upazilas including the district headquarters for rainfall some days. In addition, all the regional roads in the district were damaged and the crop lands were destroyed. And most of the damage has done to the fisheries sectors.
According to data from the fisheries department, this year, fishes of 1 thousand and 48 ponds and lake of 247 hectares area have been swept away. Where there were about 85 metric tons of fishes worth 1 lakh 31 thousand. The estimated market value is about Tk 2 crores 14 lakhs. The loss of fisheries in the last monsoon season was about a crore.
Khagrachhari District Fisheries Officer AKM Mokhlesur Rahman said, “In the district headquarter and Dighinala upazila, more damage has done to the fisheries sector”.
On the other hand, District administration sources said, In the heavy rains and hilly slopes, around 8 thousand and 40 families were partially affected in the 4 upazilas of Khagrachhari district. And the affected crop area is 5 hectares.
In fact, as the Chengi and Maini river governance projects are not implemented, the river erosion cannot be prevented. As a result, in every rainy season, the vast area is going down under flood water.
Deputy Commissioner of Khagrachhari Hill District Md. Shahidul Islam said, “A list of damages has been prepared and sent to the concerned ministry. In the meantime, the support I have received has been conveyed to the victims”.
“Needed more help. If available from the Ministry, those will be distributed in accordance with list proportion”, DC added.
It is noted that, Khagrachhari district recorded 575.98 mm of rainfall during the ten days of rains from 8th July.
At this time, water of Chengi and Maini rivers has increased and the lower areas along with the bank of river flooded. About three and a half thousand people took shelter in 25 shelter centre.
In addition, the district administration moved some families to safety place because of the risk of hill collapse. However, one person died in the landslide in Dighinala area.
