Fish farming in paddy field gains popularity

Fish farming in paddy field, the newly devised technology of fish scientist is getting popularity among the people of the district.
District Fisheries office sources said there are three way of fish farming in paddy field as fish culture along with paddy, fish culture before cultivation of paddy and after harvesting of paddy.
A number of people in all the six upazilas of the district have been farming Rui, Katal, Migal, Kalibaous, Pangas, Tilapia, Shorpati, Silvercarp in the low- laying areas of total 1,124 hectares paddy field in the district.
Side by side the farmers are cultivating vegetables in the adjoining fragmentation land during the last four and five years due to economic aspect.
Talking to journalists district fishery officer Monirul Islam said fish farming in paddy field has made a new chapter in fisheries sector and it is gaining popularity in the district.
He said fish farming in paddy field is more profitable and its importance is unlimited, it creates employment of rural people and fulfill the demand of nutrition.
He said farmers of the district are now annually producing about 2,000 to 2,500 tonnes of fish in the paddy fields and it is meeting the local fish demand in the district. Moreover farmers are getting more paddy in the same land.
The fisheries officer said the department of fisheries providing the farmers with logistic support.
He said if the farmers can get easy term loan and fair price rate of fish food in the market then more farmers will get interest for farming fish in paddy fields. Talking to farmers Rafiqul Islam of Alokbali village, of Sadar
upazila,Taleb Hossain of Adibad union of Raipura Upazila, Abul Khair of Gashirdia village of Shibpur upazila narrated their success story about farming fish in paddy fields. They expressed their satisfaction that last year they got an excellent production of fish from their paddy fields.
