BSS, Dhaka :
Today is the first anniversary of the present government.
Awami League (AL), which led the country’s War of Liberation in 1971, formed the government for the second consecutive term on January 12 last year (2014).
Earlier, the Awami League-led alliance won the general election of January 5, 2014. AL secured 234 seats, Jatiya Party 34 and AL allies Workers Party 6 and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) 5 seats in the polls.
The BNP-Jamaat alliance created an unstable situation across the country centering the polls.
They resorted to massive violence and brutally killed people in the name of nonstop hartal and blockade. Finally BNP did not take part in the polls to push the country into a constitutional crisis. It was a tough challenge to reestablish peace in the country in that period. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with her strong leadership met the challenge and strengthened democracy.
The year was eventful for many reasons. Verdict of six war criminals were announced in the year ignoring the immense national and international pressure.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s achieving of the “South-South Cooperation Visionary Award” of the United Nations for her extraordinary role in advancing Bangladesh towards the digital system and the expansion of education through revolutionary concept were the big achievements of the present government.
Besides, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury became chairman of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) while Awami League lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury was elected as Inter Parliamentary Union (IPO) chairman.
Bangladesh also won the polls of International Mobile Satellite Organization’s Director General, Human Rights Council and International Telecommunication Union.
In this regard, Awami League Presidium Member and Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the door of development after forming the government for the second time consecutively.
In spite of different national and international conspiracies and global recession, she (Sheikh Hasina) has put the country’s economy on a strong footing, he added.
