Economic Reporter :
The edible oil companies have to get new standard licences as the government has made it mandatory to keep Vitamin A in their product.
The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has started cancelling the old licences that do not mandate Vitamin A in edible oil.
BSTI official Md Saiful Islam told The New Nation on Sunday licences of 41 companies have been revoked until now. The companies that have met the new criterion are being given the new licence, he added.
The government has decided to provide the people with necessary Vitamin A through edible oil to safeguard public health. For this reason, a law mandating the vitamin in edible oil was passed in 2013.
The previous licence BSTI had been issuing had no condition to keep the vitamin. “Naturally, the previous licences need to be cancelled. Many companies have already taken the new licence,” BSTI official Islam said.
The companies that are not taking new licences have lost the right to refine or supply edible oil with their licence revoked.
