Chattagram Bureau :
An import laden container got damaged when a fire broke out inside a yard of Chattogram port on Saturday morning.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Md Omar Faruk said the fire broke out suddenly at a container stored at yard number 8 at around 8.30am.
Firefighting units from Bandar Fire Station rushed to the spot as soon as smoke was seen coming out from the container, he said. “We managed to extinguish the smoke by 10.30am.”
It was declared that the cargo in the container had Sodium Percarbonate Tablet used as oxygen supplement for fish pond, he said.
The container was immediately removed so that the fire could not get spread to the adjoining containers, he added.
Fazle Ekram Chowdhury, managing director or Fazle & Sons, the private berth operator of the jetty, said the container was kept at a yard designated for storing dangerous cargo. Eon Animal Health Products Ltd of Gazipur imported the container that arrived on a vessel named Cape Orient on May 9, according to officials.
A four-member probe body was formed led by CPA Deputy Director (Security) SM Masudul Islam to investigate into the incident, Faruk said.
