Fire at Chalantika slum gutted 100 shanties

Staff Reporter: Fire broke out in Mirpur’s Chalantika slum in the capital at 4:15am.
Witnesses and the slum residents said it to the journalists.
Fifteen units of fire fighters brought the fire under control around 5:45am, said Lima Khanam, an duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.
The reason behind the blaze could not be known yet.
Sources said, Parveen (35) a resident of the slum, was admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with 90 per cent burn injuries.
Meanwhile, a man named Shahidul, had his leg injured while trying to escape the fire, the official said. The victim was taken to a private hospital.
According to the locals, more than 100 shanties were gutted in the fire.
Officials of the government agency are yet to ascertain the losses.
Earlier, on the night of August 16 last year, a massive fire broke out at the slum in Chalantika, burnt more than a thousand shanties.
