Staff Reporter :Two readymade garment factories suffered extensive damages in fire in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, on Friday. At least 20 garment workers were injured in the accident when they tried to douse the fire and also tried to come out of the buildings of the factories after hearing the fire alarm. The injured were admitted to several hospitals and clinics in Savar area, including Enam Medical College Hospital. Senior station officer of Dhaka Export Processing Zone’s (DEPZ) fire station Abdul Hamid Mia said that fire originated at Fuji Garments, a sweater factory, at around 6:00 am at Kuturia area of Savar’s Ashulia. The fire started from the ground floor of the factory and it soon engulfed the storeroom and some other floors of the garment, burning down some goods in the storeroom. On information, seven fire fighting units from Dhaka EPZ, Dhamrai and Savar rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after the efforts of one hour and a half with the help of local peopleThe cause of the fire could not be known immediately, said Abdul Hamid. He, however, said that they suspect an electrical malfunction at the storeroom might have caused the fire. The amount of loss is yet to be assessed.Another fire broke out at the ZA Apparels Ltd at Norsinghapur area in Savar at about 2:30 pm. On information, two units of fire fighters rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control immediately. The cause of the fire in the factory also could not be known immediately and the amount of loss is yet to be assessed.Vehicular movement in the area halted for hours following the fire in the two garments.
