UNB, Bagerhat :
Over two weeks into a fire incident that took place in the Sundabans, another fire broke out at Abdullah Shila in Chandpai range of the world’s largest mangrove forest in Sharankhola upazila on Wednesday morning.
M Saidul Islam, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East Zone,
said the fire originated from a point at Abdullah Shila, adjacent to Nangli camp, around 10am.
Forest department officials have already cut a ‘fire lane’ to stop the spread of the fire, Saidul added.
Three firefighting units from Bagerhat sadar, Morelganj and Shoronkhola upazila rushed in and brought the blaze under control. However, the fire could not fully be extinguished till filing of the report around 4:30 am.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department has formed a three-member committee, led by assistant forest conservator (Chandpai Range) Belayet Hossain, to investigate the fire incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within two weeks. Sources at the local fire service station said they have managed to bring the fire under control as they cut a fire lane encompassing about 10 acres around the fire as a preparatory measure.
