The High Court on Wednesday directed the lower court concerned to finish the trial proceedings of a corruption case filed against former State Minister Lutfozzaman Babar in 30 days.
The HC also summarily rejected a petition filed by Babar seeking transfer of the court where the corruption case against him is pending.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order after holding hearing on the petition.
Advocate Parvez Hossain took part in the hearing on behalf of Babar, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
Khurshid Alam Khan said, “Lutfozzaman Babar came to the High Court for transferring the court to where his case is pending. But the case is in the last stage in the trial court. After hearing the parties, the court asked the Special Judge’s Court-7 of Dhaka to finish the trial of the case within 30 days.”
Mirza Zahidul Alam, an Assistant Director of the ACC, filed the case with Ramna Model Police Station on January 13, 2008 against Babar on charge of giving false statement over wealth worth Tk 70.59 million.
The commission submitted charge sheet against Babar in the lower court on July 16, 2008. The lower court accepted the charges of the case on July 23, the same year.
At the testimony stage, the court asked him whether he would stand for self-defence. Babar replied in the negative, adding that he would submit a written statement.
Babar has taken time thrice for submitting the written statement. In the meantime he filed a petition with the High Court seeking transfer of the court.
The case is scheduled for November 15 this year for further proceedings in the trial court, said Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik.
The former State Minister for Home Babar has been convicted and sentenced to death in the sensational 10-truck arms haul case and August 21 grenade attack case.
