Field day on pumpkin, brinjal held in Faridpur

A field day on Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) invented summer pumpkin BARI-4 and brinjal through grafting method was held Thursday at village Dhuldi under Machchar union of Sadar upazilla.
About two hundred vegetable farmers both men and women were present on the field day financed by USAID under the support programme of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
Speakers at the field day stressed on the need for introducing poison free vegetables for the consumers during the whole year. This is only possible by adopting IPM method with improved quality of variety of popular vegetables like pumpkin of BARI-4 and grafted brinjal which can be made available throughout the whole year.
Speakers also stressed on the use of pheromone trap to kill the pests instead of using chemical pesticides which is harmful and injurious for human health.
They also disclosed that pumpkin of BARI-4 variety and double grafting brinjal production are higher than our local variety which can ensure abundance in the market as well as can bring more profit for the growers.
The speakers informed that so far about 2000 farmers of Barisal, Jessore and Faridpur districts have been brought under producing vegetables under IPM method through imparting training to them. They drew the attraction of the farmers about the quality pheromone trap and quality seeds to achieve the target.
The field day was addressed among others by Assistant Coordinator of IPM project Dr. Md. Shahadat Hossain, Senior Scientific Officer of Vegetable division of BARI Dr. AKM Qamruzzaman and Scientific officer Dr. M. Nazimuddin.
