The Holy Quran reveals : This is the Book ; /in it is guidance sure, without doubt, /to those who fear God;/who believe in the Unseen/Are steadfast in prayer, /and spend out of what We/Have provided for them;/And who believe in the Revelation/Sent to thee,/And sent before thy time/And (in their hearts)/have the assurance of the Hereafter. /they are on (true)
guidance,/From their Lord, and it is /These who will prosper.(Sura Baqara 2: 2,3,4,5. The Holy Quran : Translation and Commentary by A Yusuf Ali).
Through these Ayats, the Holy Quran introduces us with the people on ‘(true) guidance.’
It also assures that they ‘will prosper’. The people on (true) guidance are those (a) who fear Allah, (b) believe in the Unseen, (c) steadfast in prayer, (d) spend out of what have been provided for them and (e) believe in the Revelation sent (present and past). They have the assurance of the Hereafter. Allah also assures of their being prosperous in the next Ayat in the words ‘will prosper.’
In the context of Holy Ramzan the parts of the mentioned Ayat ‘who fear Allah’ and ‘who believe in the Unseen’ are very important and significant. Fasting, unique in the nature of worship, is based on ‘Iman bil ghayeb’-‘belief in the Unseen’. In fasting, there is no scope of ‘ria’ (demonstration of piousness). But there is the scope of secretly breaking fast. So, it is completely a fear of Allah- related ritual, basing on the ‘belief in the Unseen.’ The devotee believes that Allah observes all secret deeds and acts. The fasting person thus becomes fortunate to have His Infinite Mercy.
The people who observe fasting, but do not abstain from evils, are, on the contrary, a failure. Rasulullah (Sm) said, “Allah has no need of a rozadar’s refraining from food and drink who could not refrain from lies and other bad deeds”. He said, “What good does fasting do to one if one does not check one’s tongue, hearing, sight and sense.?”
With firm ‘belief in the Unseen’ observance of fasting strengthens our faith and builds our character free from all temptations and ready to sacrifice everything in the Name of Allah. This is what the ethical demand is. If, in the practical side, we observe scenes below expectations, then there must be some lackings behind. So, we should be very cautious about our performances in this Holy month.
