Faruque gets Wellcome Trust award

The Wellcome Trust, a global charitable organisation that supports excellence in biomedical research and medical humanities, has awarded a prestigious Senior Investigator Award to icddr,b scientist Dr Shah M Faruque for his research on cholera.
The award is given to internationally renowned scientists who are chosen by a panel of world’s leading scientific experts through a stringent selection process, according to an icddr,b media release.
Under this award, the Wellcome Trust is expected to provide around US$ 2.7 million over 5 years to conduct research towards generating knowledge to control cholera epidemics in developing countries.
Dr Shah M Faruque, director of icddr,b’s Centre for Food and Waterborne Diseases, and his research team previously discovered how otherwise harmless Vibrio cholerae bacteria turn pathogenic, causing cholera, and the mechanisms by which the pathogen persists in the aquatic environment in countries where cholera is an epidemic disease.
