Farming climate resilient orange potato for flood prone districts

Climate resilient Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) could help flood affected farmers here to recoup with their losses as the high yielding variety of the potato could be cultivated on sandy, silt and loamy land easily with minimum cost, labor and low irrigation.
Experts and the stakeholders at a function here has underscored the need for farming of orange fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) at large scale to change the socio-economic condition of the farmers and protect the country’s food security.
“As the soil of the char land here is very suitable for OFSP farming, the farmers can be economically benefited through cultivating the variety in a bid to change their lot and meet the growing demand of nutrition for building a healthy nation”, they said.
They said these while addressing a function of quality OFSP seeds distribution to the farmers for root production at Maddhya Uriya village under Fulchhari upazila in the district on Wednesday afternoon.
BRAC, an international development organization based in Bangladesh, organized the function under the SUSTAIN project funded by UKAID in cooperation with department of agriculture extension (DAE) and Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute.
Deputy Director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin addressed the function as the chief guest and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman was present as the special guest while field coordinator of International Potato Center (CIP) Bangladesh Enamul Haque presided over the ceremony. The function was also addressed by different concerned officials of BRAC.
DD AKM Ruhul Amin the project of OFSP also looked at generating income among the rural women for empowering them economically.
Talking to the BSS Dr. EHM Shofiur Rahaman said 681-bigha of land owned by 2,500 farmers in Gaibandha, 1,500 in Faridpur and 500 in Satkhira districts were brought under the OFSP farming this year.
Abdul Barek, a potato trader of Puraton Bazaar in the district town, said per kg OSFP potato could be sold in the local market at Taka 18-20. A farmer can get 25-mound potato yield from five decimal of land which is higher than the regular potatoes.
