Farmers lost over Tk 56,000cr in Covid-19 shutdown

Farmers across the country have lost an estimated Tk 56,536.68 crore amid the Covid-19 forced shutdown across the country.
A study conducted by Brac’s Iffat Anjum Anika and Nahrin Rahman Swarna titled ‘Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Agriculture and Implications for Food Security’ revealed the
estimated numbers portraying the severe damages our farmers’ have suffered in the past few months (March to May).
The findings of this study were revealed on Thursday afternoon via a virtual meeting arranged by Brac, the country’s NGO.
While presenting, Nahrin Rahman said that the report includes the study of two sectors — market failure and vulnerability of farmers.
“Data was collected from a total of 1,581from farmers representing all our 64 districts. These respondents were reached through telephone,” she added.
She said: “Information regarding the price of the products cultivated and produced by the country’s farmers was collected from the Department of Agricultural Marketing.”
According to the study, at least 88% of our farmers faced challenges of any sort during the government imposed shutdown to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
Moreover, all the fish farmers who were interviewed complained that they also faced challenges and problems due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
Meanwhile, the researchers also announced a set of recommendations including a farmer-friendly credit distribution system to reduce red-tape barriers for the betterment of the farmers of Bangladesh.
