Farmers in char area making good profit growing early potato

Hundreds of char peasants are making a good profit producing early potato in Sarikandi upazila of Bogra district in this current season.
To make the cultivation a grand success, the peasants of the district has emphasized on taking care early planted potato variety to get a bumper production and good market price defying adverse weather condition.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) the marginal farmers of the district have taken some 3,000 hectares of land last October under early potato cultivation hoping for producing over 20,00 tonnes of fresh yield.
 “I will begin harvesting of the vegetable next week if the weather condition remains favourable till the next week,” said farmer Sammad Golam Rabbany under the upazila of the district.
In a visit on Sunday the correspondent found the farmers are tending the crops land elsewhere the area from very early at the morning to late at night. The farmers are passing busy time to make the potato tress healthy by using organic and chemical fertilisers. They are also spraying insecticide to drive the pest attack.
“I have cultivated some 14 decimal of early cardinal potato verity spending over Tk 2000 to pay seeds and manure cost in this current season and expecting to make over Tk 2300 if the price remain high during the harvesting time,” said farmer Mobarak Hossain, 34, under the upazila.
Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said, after receding the flood water the farmers have emphasized on cultivating early potato cultivation in this season. The excellent growing of the potato predicts bumper production, he added.
