The farmers are happy following excellent flowering in mango trees in all eight northern districts under Rangpur agriculture region with the advent of spring.
The mango trees in orchards and homesteads have already started wearing eye-catching looks with massive sprouting amid favourable climatic conditions in the region.
According to officials and experts in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and other organisations, a brighter prospect for mango production prevails this season as flowering continues excellent.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said that sprouting of buds started little earlier this season following comparatively shorter winter as the climatic condition remained suitable so far for the process.
“Around 65 per cent of the mango trees have already bloomed predicting over 90 per cent sprouting by the first week of next month due to favourable climatic condition this season in the region,” he said.
Deputy Director of the DAE for Rangpur SM Asharf Ali said farmers had been showing more interests in mango farming on commercial basis as they got repeated bumper production with huge profits in recent years.
“Many popular mango varieties like Gopalbhog, Lengra, Fazlee, Nakfazlee, Khirsapati, Mohanbhog, Chyatapori, Haribhanga, Lakhna and Amrapali are grown largely in the region,” he added.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid said mango production could be increased further by evolving newer high yielding varieties and educating the growers and adopting latest technologies.
Talking to BSS, Rangpur Regional Farm Broadcasting Officer of Agriculture Information Service Abu Sayem said the farmers already started taking extensive preparations, care and measures so that the mango could grow properly.
Predicting excellent sprouting this season, he suggested the farmers to contact with field levels agriculture officers and control the attacks by hoppers and other pests on mango flowers for better mango production.
According to the DAE sources, there are about 4.8 million fruit- giving mango trees on some 38,000 hectares of land in the region as the number continues increasing every year following expansion of commercial basis mango cultivation.
Regional Additional Director of DAE Shah Alam predicted bumper production of mango if the drought situation during fruit formation period did not prolong, temperature did not go very high and seasonal nor’westers remained within tolerable limits.
“If the climatic conditions, fluctuations in temperatures, rainfalls, attack by pests and insects remained normal during the next few months, formation of mango would be excellent to yield bumper production this season,” Alam added.
