Raj Kiron Das, Rajshahi :
The vegetable farmers of Rajshahi region have been frustrated over low price of their produce.
Even they cannot recoup their cultivation cost. As a result, this year they were incurring heavy losses due to low prices in vegetable cultivation.
The farmers have been cultivating here cauliflowers, cabbages, gourds, brinjals, radishes, lady’s fingers and other types of demandable vegetables in the area.
Some of them have been becoming beneficiary but on the other hand some of them recurring in huge losses by cultivating vegetables.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Rajshahi, the farmers of nine upazilas across the region have cultivated vegetables in more than 10,000 hectares of lands this year and got bumper production due to favourable weather. If the farmers had got the support from the government to the vegetables processing systems in the area, they would get the fair prices. But, a group of middlemen reduces the market price willingly to more import of the production in the local markets and takes the lion share of the market prices, DAE sources also added.
While talking to The New Nation, the vegetable growers said that only some days before they have got satisfactory price selling vegetables but now the price has stood very low. So the farmers have fall into huge losses for the worst situation.
Visiting a local market at Bidirpur of Mohanpur upazila, it was found that per kg chili pepper is being sold at Tk 32, per maund of brinjal at Tk 200 to 400, per maund of radish at Tk 300 to 350 and per sack of papaw at Tk only 250 to 300.
Shahidul Islam, a vegetable grower of Itaghati village under Paba upazila said that a group of middlemen are controlling the market and they fixed the vegetable’s price willingly.
We have sold vegetables according to their fixed price. So, no vegetable sellers can earn extra profit selling any types of vegetables.
Abdul Jalil, another farmer of Shampur village under Mohanpur upazila alleged that we have been providing hard labour day by day but we cannot earn extra profit as a group of dishonest syndicates are controlling the local market. We even cannot recoup the cultivation cost easily.
