Farmers eye bumper jute production in south-western region

Farmers in 10 districts of the south-western region under Khulna division are expecting a bumper production of the ‘golden fiber’ in the current season.
The ten districts are – Jessore, Narail, Jhenaidah, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Meherpur, Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 1,93,073 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in ten districts this year with the production target of about 21,04,174 bales of jute in the area.
District wise break up of land is as follows: 25,429 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation in Jessore, 22,879 hectares in Narail, 20,247 hectares in Jhenaidah, 30,913 hectares in Magura and 35,284 hectares in Kushtia.
Besides, 20,379 hectares of land have been cultivated in Chuadanga, 23,314 hectares in Meherpur, 10,928 hectares in Satkhira, 2,379 hectares in Khulna and 1,331 hectares of land in Bagerhat.
DAE office sources said local farmers and growers of the region have expressed similar hope to get a bumper production due to favorable climatic conditions.
The officials of DAE particularly sub-assistant agriculture officers at the field level are motivating the farmers to cultivate jutes on their land in a large scale to meet its demand for the local jute mills.
Field workers and crop specialists of DAE are helping the farmers to make the cultivation programme a grand success, said M Abdul Aziz, additional director of DAE of Jessore region.
