Farmers expect bumper off-seasonal bitter-gourd production in Dupchanchia

The farmers are expecting to be self-reliant cultivating the off-seasonal bitter-gourd under Dupchanchia Upazila of Bogra district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has set a target of bringing around 40 hectares of land in six unions of the upazila the kharaly season but the farmers cultivated the crop on 45 hectares of land, said farmer Mamun. He also said, the growers have taken adequate steps in collaboration with other departments this season to achieve the fixed production targets.
According to the sources concerned, the lucrative crop is now growing well everywhere in the district which is predicting bumper productions as the farmers are pouring animated effort to make huge profit. Harvesting will begin next month predict Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
“I had brought 0.40 acre of land under off-seasonal bitter-gourd cultivation last year spending Tk 10000 and made over Tk 22000 from the crop land.” said grower Yakub at Keut village. “Getting bumper production and fair price, I have brought 0.20 acre of land under the crop cultivation costing Tk 8000 aiming financially self-reliant in this season.” he further said.
While visiting the correspondent found, the farmers of the upzaila are tending the mild crops defying adverse climate. They are optimistic to make more profit then previous year after harvesting the crops.
 Farmer Ranzon Kumar Paul, 42, of said, he has brought 0.30 decimal of land under off-seasonal bitter-gourd cultivation in this season spending tk 3000 borrowing from local NGO. He is expecting to make Tk 40000 from the crop land if the price remains high, he added.
Deputy Director of DAE said this district has immense prospects to achieve self- reliance in bitter-gourd productions. In this regard, they underscored the need for using the latest agro-technologies, he added.
