Children unsafe at mothers' lap: Family feud blamed for killing kids

Several dozens of distressed mothers have killed their children in the city and other parts of the country in recent years.
The offspring are being murdered by their mothers who have become frustrated in lives centering poverty, family clashes and drug addiction, intelligence agencies, police and relatives claimed.
They said, the laps of such mothers are turning into unsafe day by day for the lives of the children as nobody get the chance to save them from disorder mothers.
The heinous types mothers normally kill their kids after loss of their social norms and values as well as hope of lives, according to them.
Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF), in a report in January this year said at least 50 children have been killed by their parents centering poverty, family clashes and drug addiction.
It also mentioned that the laps of many mothers are becoming unsafe for their children.
National Human Rights Commission former Chairman Kazi Reazul Haque blamed social unrest behind the minor killings.
“A kind of social unrest persists in our society. Children are being killed over doubt only,” he said, adding “The state has to come forward to eliminate this social unrest.”
In this backdrop, a woman killed two of her children by slitting their throats, and then tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire at South Goran of Khilgaon in Dhaka in the early hours of Saturday. The deceased are two sisters — Alfi, 11, and Jannat 12.
Khilgaon police upon receiving the information recovered the bodies and took the mother Akhterunnesa Popi to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital around 10:40am, said DMCH police outpost In-charge Bachchu Miah.
Popi confesses to the police that she slaughtered her two minor daughters after she has become frustrated for money as her husband provides Tk 1,100 per month.
On June 17, 2019, a mother allegedly slaughtered her two-year-old daughter at Sonatonpur village in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district. The deceased has been identified as Sneha, youngest of the three children of Mamun Ur Rashid.
According to police and locals, Shamim Ara Saima, 35, wife of Mamun Ur Rashid, took Sneha to the kitchen of their house and slaughtered her with a sharp weapon. Mamun said his wife has been suffering from mental illness.
Meanwhile, a woman poisoned her son, daughter and herself to death at Chalitabaria Digha village in Sharsha upazila of Jashore district over a family feud. The deceased has been identified as Hamida Khatun, 35, wife of Ibrahim, her daughter Sharifa Khatun, 11 and son Shohan Hossain, 4.
Kaiba Union Parishad Chairman Hassan Feroz Tinku said that Hamida killed her daughter, son and herself as she had been oppressed by her mother in-law.
Besides, a drug addict woman committed suicide after strangulating her two minor daughters at Kanthali Deshibai in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district on December 6, 2015.
The deceased were identified as Fensi Begum, 32, and her two daughters –Aklima, 7, and Taslima, 9.
Locals said that drug addicted Fensi killed her children for saving money.
