Bagerhat Correspondent :

The bailey bridge that was constructed over the tributary of the river Bhairab under Fakirhat Upazila in the district on the old Dhaka-Khulna via Mawa Road in order to mainly connect Fakirhat Upazila headquarters and Mulghar (the northern part of the Upazila) more than 2 decades ago now has turned into a death trap due to lack of repairing works .
At that time the bridge used to play an important role in the communication sector of this region. When it was constructed local vehicles moved on it but later long routes vehicles used to cross this old bailey bridge though it was not repaired for long . Now its steel frames and plates became unfit for use. But no step was taken to repair it. As a result, it has became totally unfit for use and accidents take place almost everyday. The worst affected are the minor school students who are to cross it twice in a day to attend their educational institutions.
After the construction of the new Dhaka-Khulna via Mawa Highway, the pressure of vehicles on it (bailey bridge) decreased to some extent. But in spite of that it is still playing an important role in the local communication sector. Consequently, a large number of vehicles and thousands of passers-by are to cross it every day taking risks.
In the face of strong demand of the locals it was partially repaired by the authorities concerned a few years ago but by this time it was also damaged.
The local people strongly urged the authorities concerned to take a necessary step to repair this important bridge immediately.
